Active Textile
A/W 18/19 sees active textiles become more expressive, with 80s Spandex boom, brushed velvets, silks and more than a sprinkle of glitter seen across all categories. Traditional jersey knits and wool blends offer extreme comfort. For advanced performance, textiles and 'organic electronics' support health, working in sync with both the body and the environment.
80's Neo-Nostalgia
1980s glamour returns to activewear with nostalgic prints and finishes inspired by the original Spandex boom. Fusing new-wave retro influences with a futuristic contemporary edge, stretch fabrics glow with shimmering finishes, while foil prints and electric graphics complete the nostalgic look.
Glossy Velvet
Velvets and velours become more opulent, continuing the theme of glamour and a return to dressing up. Hi-lo styling is key, with classic sports-casual styles such as joggers recast in ostentatious crushed velvets. Lightweight stretch velours also cross over to loungewear and loungerie.
Space Exploration
The development of space technology will have a powerful pull on health and fitness, as more people use it to guide their wellbeing. For activewear, mysterious space-inspired technological innovation will appear more on sports fabrics, and trigger new athletic trends.
Close-fitting Design
As fitness focuses on extending 'health-spans' not lifespans, next-gen fabrics and materials will protect and support the body. 'Supersuits' incorporate exoskeletons that support posture and enhance muscle performance, while bespoke 3D plates offer protection from injury. Compression-wear includes Kinesio Tape-like structures that deliver lift and support, and also aid recovery.
Comfy Yarn
Rest will increasingly be seen as an activity in itself, so comfort will be key. Loungewear basics are elevated with super-soft grey marl jerseys and fleeces, using eco-friendly Tencel and Cupro blends. Layered tones of light grey marls emphasise a calming and restorative feel.
Leisure Fleece
Knit texture and construction becomes more obvious for active base layers. Seam-free constructions and circular knits create graphic shapes and athletic colour-blocking, while hybrid blends enhance the natural performance of wools such as merino with additional stretch and durability.
Mineral Technology
A more spiritual approach to wellness emerges, focusing on healing and rituals. Fabrics are imbued with therapeutic thermo-reactive minerals, harnessing the properties of metals and crystals. On an aesthetic level, ores such as hematite inspire a new, lustrous direction for metallic finishes on knits and wovens.
Froth Texture
A more dressed-up approach sees knitted active fabrics take on decorative structures. Blistered effects are important for both cotton and poly base layers, with lightweight retracted constructions that also trap cooling air next to the skin.
